Church-state separation in South Africa

A friend of mine alerted me to a recent church-separation incident in South Africa that involved a group of people who should know better: judges.

Specifically, Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng requested that a number of other judges attend a Christian leadership conference led by American evangelist John C. Maxwell. Take a look at Maxwell’s website, by the way, it’s beyond hilarious. This is a snippet from the front page:

Whether you know John Maxwell the author, the speaker, or the mentor – you will know John as the #1 leadership authority in the world. We are The John Maxwell Company, a leadership development organization built on the timeless leadership principles of John Maxwell.

So, here we have South African’s Chief Justice asking his colleagues to go to an event that is not only overtly Christian but is run by the self-aggrandizing John C. Maxwell whose obvious aim is to make as much money as possible selling watered down religious self-help claptrap.

There is a good side to this story, though: none of the judges attended the meeting. Good for them.
