Santorum and women soldiers

Women in the U.S. Army will now be allowed access to a wider range of jobs that will bring them closer to combat.

Predictably, conservatives are not pleased, because this goes against their antiquated view of women as Stepford Wives whose lot in life is to submit to their husbands and have babies. Republican presidential contender Rick Santorum came right out and said what was on his mind: women’s emotions will get in the way if they’re allowed to fight alongside their more stable male counterparts.

Methinks Santorum does not know women very well. He ought to look around and notice what women are achieving in the 21st century. At the very least, he should discuss the research that has been done on this topic.

But then again, perhaps he shouldn’t, because it doesn’t provide particularly good support for his case (a good summary of some of the key studies is available here).

One Response to Santorum and women soldiers

  1. actually, I think the issue is the conservative’s antiquated view on women as stepford wives.

I think it’s their antiquated views about not wanting women to be captured, raped, or killed on the battlefield by the enemy. But in today’s age of gender equality, we have no need to have such views. After all, if a man is expendable enough to be captured, tortured, and killed by the enemy, why not a woman?
