According to Christians, a powerful, benevolent god created a world in which about 700,000 babies and children die of malaria every year.
I have to conclude then, that when it comes to malaria, the Christian god is not as powerful or benevolent as Joe Cohen, a researcher for GlaxoSmithKline who, after a 24 year slog, has finally developed and successfully tested the first effective vaccine for malaria.
Of course, if it’s actually part of God’s plan to have 700,000 babies and children die annually from malaria, then Joe is doing the devil’s work.
Or perhaps Joe is God’s most effective way of bringing about a decrease in the suffering of children due to malaria. If this is the case then – no offense to Dr. Cohen – I have to question God’s abilities: is that all he’s got?
