I’m a little peeved by one particular response to Obama’s comments on the mosque, namely that he’s dithering or obfuscating in order to maintain political standing. Obama made a legitimate and important distinction between two concepts: our obligation to uphold the religious freedom enshrined in the constitution, and the recognition that we must fulfill this obligation regardless of where our personal opinion steers us.
Indeed, the president’s personal opinion on this matter is irrelevant, since it is not he who decides whether the community center is built. Instead, his role is to remind the people of the principles on which our country is founded. And that he has done.
